Fruits of Deviation

A film about a mutant cheetah making the most of their predicament from my sophomore year of college, created with the help of fellow classmate Jonathan Osazee. I was responsible for the storyboards, background art, compositing, sound design, and key animation. I created a workflow to blend my TVPaint animation seamlessly with my After Effects animation.

This film was not able to be fully finished due to time constraints, as it was made within the span of only one semester where I had a very heavy course load and I was also working my butt off on One Hand Clapping at the time, but I'm still very proud of the work I did on it, and the camaraderie I had with Jonathan. I’m grateful for the things I learned about what it’s like to manage more than one project at a time. Special thanks to Haley Tomaszewski for giving the mutant cheetah a voice!

Backgrounds

I went for a very loose vector-like lineless style for backgrounds that focused on whimsical shapes and color and could easily highlight the lined characters onscreen without feeling too stylistically different from them. They were made with a lot of lasso tool and paint bucket or gradient tool combos. Keeping everything loose and incorporating visible brush strokes in some places worked well to unify the aesthetic.

“Wholesome Meal”; Styleframe, with assets I took into compositing later to make the final shot in After Effects.

Rough design for a title card.

Pre-compositing mockup of a background and character assets made for a shot that pans upwards.

Pre-compositing mockup of a scene in TVPaint before all the elements were separated for animation and rejoined in compositing.

Screengrab of a character reaction shot animated fully in After Effects.

Pitch presentation synopsis. Note: Cheetahsaurus Rex is referred to with he/him pronouns here, but my personal headcanon is that Cheetahsaurus Rex is a girl.

An amusing composite of several panels at the beginning of my storyboards/animatic.
